How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays a prominent part as your furnace prepares to work in your space.
Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board commences running the draft inducer blower motor. This drains combustion gases from the heat exchanger and pulls in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that plenty of air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and provides heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Breaks Down
When your pressure switch isn’t functioning promptly, you’ll likely hear the fan run and the switch clicking a couple times before the furnace turns off completely. When a part isn’t performing right, your furnace will turn off for your safety.
Your furnace will tell you something is incorrect with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to display error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may see quick flashes or an alternating slow flash as it passes on a fault code.
