The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that provides financial support to people in the construction industry who endured life-altering injuries. Once a year the Foundation honors multiple recipients with a grant and this year the Joseph Groh Foundation was happy to announce Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, raised in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil endured a severe stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the ability to use his left arm and it left his left leg severely impaired, leaving Adil with foot drop. Only able to walk with a heavy brace, his muscles began to degenerate and his doctors feared that he would ultimately end up restricted to a wheelchair.
Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their sole source of income, resulting in financial stress on the couple with three children in college and one in elementary school. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, a device that uses functional electrical stimulation to help someone with Adil’s condition walk again. Unfortunately, Adil and Laila were not able to afford the WalkAid System in addition to the intensive rehab that would be required so he could learn how to use it.
Thankfully, an employee at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, because of the incredible grant, Adil obtained the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing hope back to Adil and Laila.
