The Ban on R22 Refrigerant

R-22 Refrigerant Phasing Out

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that R-22 refrigerant (also known as the brand FREON®), a common refrigerant for residential heat pumps and air conditioning systems, is harmful to the environment. The EPA is regulating the production and use of refrigerants and ultimately all air conditioning and heat pump refrigerants that contain chlorine will be eliminated.

How does this affect you?

If you currently have a heating and cooling system that uses R-22 refrigerant, it does not mean you have to panic or run out to purchase a new system. Production of R-22 refrigerant is winding down, and while the cost will go up, production will go on until 2020. At that time recycled refrigerants should be available for a while.

As a result of the change, Becht / Givens Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Louisville carries R410A, a more environmentally friendly choice for refrigerants which lowers the impact on the ozone layer. Up to 50% of home energy costs may go toward heating and cooling the home.
